Zen Masters after Wumen:

Hengchuan (1222-1289)

Gulin (1262-1329)

Gulin quoted a saying by Master Dongshan: “If there are words in the words, these are called dead phrases. If there is wordlessness in the words, these are called living phrases.” Gulin said, “What are living phrases, you Zen worthies? When we get here, it is hard to find people who know.

“There’s another saying: You must study the living phrase. Do not study dead phrases. If you comprehend at the living phrase, you will be fit to be a teacher of humans and celestial beings. If you comprehend at the dead phrase, then you will not even be able to save yourself.

The great teacher Linji said. Here with us is the living intent of the ancestral teachers. Thus, when Linji asked Huangbo three times about the true great meaning of the Buddha Dharma, he got hit three times: it was like being brushed by a fragrant branch. If Linji hadn’t studied the living phrase, how could he have been as he was? The ancients were this way, but modern people are not.

“The living aspect will not let itself be pinned down and cannot be called back. The ancient sages did not make static arrangements: up till now they’ve never had a fixed location anywhere Comprehend it on the tips of the hundred grasses!

The old monk in the noisy marketplace

Recognizes his true self.

The spiritual source is bright and clear:

The branching streams flow on in secret.”

.

Who is that “old monk” do you think?

Punched by Huangbo is being “brushed with fragrant branches”… a trip to the perfume counter?
